Structural simulation and optimization for developing modern machines

Structural simulations of machine tools are a means to understand machine behavior in operation. Among other things, this makes it possible to design new machines and optimize their structures for the intended process use, analyze the causes of unsatisfactory machining results on existing machines, and identify undesirable behavior in operation. We carry out comprehensive analyses of the structural behavior of compliant bodies and assemblies using the finite element method (FEM), solving tasks in close connection with manufacturability, machine assembly, and the time constraints set by the industrial partner. We handle the full range—from static linear problems to calculations of non-stationary, transient, and nonlinear phenomena. We build computational models from the customer’s 2D or 3D documentation. Our activities focus on:

  • structural calculations to determine static and dynamic stiffness and the machine’s modal properties,
  • structural optimization and advanced mathematical methods to reduce weight and increase stiffness,
  • modeling of unconventional materials,
  • virtual modeling of the machining process,
  • thermo-mechanical models of machines.

Benefits of using structural optimization

Optimizing structural and thermo-mechanical properties is one of the main objectives in developing machine supporting structures.

An integrated development workflow can achieve up to 50% weight savings compared to standard solutions while simultaneously improving structural performance. The key benefits are reduced operating energy, higher accuracy and productivity, and thus greater machine competitiveness.

We perform advanced optimization computations to optimize structural and thermo-mechanical properties:

  • conceptual layout design of machine structures—rapid assessment of variants of the axes’ kinematic arrangements,
  • topology design - allocating material placement,
  • sizing of dimensions and wall/rib thicknesses.
